Translation process overview

This site hosts content in a number of languages, and relies on volunteers to translate the content from its original language which is normally English. Content includes both contributed articles and the menus, labels, instructions and other displayed content of the site. This FAQ item provides an overview of the translation process.

  1. Translators need to be logged into the site's administrative back-end and have appropriate user permissions in order to be able to undertake a translation - if you are not already a user then read Registering on this site. Please do not try to translate articles from the site's front-end.
  2. The site content that needs to be translated includes both A. articles that are contributed by users, and B. lots of other content (such as menu and other labels, system instructions, module output, sections and categories etc) that is generated by the Joomla content management system and its extensions. New content can appear at any time on a dynamic site, so see checking for new/outstanding translation tasks for the easiest way of identifying new or changed content.
  3. Should translated content not be available when required for a language, the site will display the original English version. For articles this will be accompanied by a message saying that no translation is currently available.
  4. See Translating site content for the process steps to be followed. Only some users will have the permission levels required to undertake this process on the administrative part of the site.
